NEMA STRENGTHENS COLLABORATION WITH OYO STATE GOVERNMENT ON DISASTER MANAGEMENT

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Oyo State Government in advancing disaster management, risk reduction, and humanitarian response initiatives across the State.

The assurance was given by the Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, when she received the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Barrister Bayo Lawal, who paid a visit to the NEMA Headquarters in Abuja.

Mrs. Zubaida Umar described the visit as timely and strategic, noting that it underscores the growing commitment to building stronger institutional partnerships with NEMA in mitigating the impacts of natural and human-induced disasters.

She highlighted that effective collaboration between Federal and State Emergency institutions remains essential for proactive disaster management, improved preparedness, and rapid response during emergencies.

“Our collective capacity to respond to disasters begins with preparedness at the state and local levels. Strengthening synergy with Oyo State is a vital step in ensuring that early warning, risk reduction, and response mechanisms are not only functional but people-centered,” the DG stated.

She assured that NEMA remains open to continuous partnership through capacity building, joint simulation exercises, and improved information sharing to enhance coordinated response operations.

Mrs. Zubaida Umar further noted that disaster management thrives on collaboration, emphasizing that effective coordination between NEMA and state governments helps bridge operational gaps and ensures that communities receive timely intervention when disasters occur.

Earlier in his remarks, the Deputy Governor, Barrister Bayo Lawal, said that the visit was aimed at deepening institutional collaboration and seeking stronger technical assistance in building the capacity of local emergency agencies.

Barrister Lawal also highlighted the state’s growing vulnerability to flood disasters and other environmental challenges, noting that collaborative strategies with NEMA will help improve preparedness and community awareness at the grassroots level.
