The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has dismissed no fewer than 61 officers for offenses ranging from certificate forgery, improper examination and fraudulent release of containers.
The list of the affected officers revealed that 16 other officers were retired from the Service also for certificate forgery and the refusal of staff order, while 41 officers, who were investigated and tried were exonerated, 22 officers were issued with query, while five officers were given written warning to be of better behaviour.
Two of the officers who got the hammer were of the rank of Comptroller of Customs, while three were Deputy Comptrollers of Customs.
Others were, nine Assistant Comptrollers and nine Chief Superintendent of Customs, among others.
In another development, the Niger Area Command of the service has said it generated N1.9 billion from January to September.
The Area Comptroller of the command, Benjamin Binga, disclosed this to newsmen in Minna on Tuesday.
He said the command also seized 3,278 bags of rice and 55 vehicles with Duty Paid Value, DPV of N52.6 million and N51.6m, respectively during the period.
According to him, the command, made up of Niger, Kogi and Kwara states, will meet its 2017 revenue target of N2.8 billion by the end of the year.
The Comptroller stressed that customs personnel would continue to mount surveillance and adopt measures to make smuggling impossible in the area.
“The command has deployed competent officers to manage all identified illegal routes used by smugglers to bring in unwholesome goods into the country,” Binga said.
Binga solicited for the support of community leaders in the three states to assist customs field officers with vital information on the movement of smugglers.
