FIRS unveils innovation to simplify tax processes

Applies *829# USSD code, customer guide

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has taken a step to revolutionize tax administration in Nigeria with the launch of an unstructured supplementary service data (USSD) code, 829#.

The FIRS Chairman, Zacch Adedeji, unveiled the system on Wednesday, saying that it aims to simplify tax processes and enhance taxpayer satisfaction.

The USSD code allows taxpayers on any mobile network to access FIRS services in real-time, eliminating the need for internet access. With this code, taxpayers can:

– Retrieve their taxpayer identification number (TIN)
– Verify their tax clearance certificate (TCC)
– Access information on tax types and rates
– Locate the nearest FIRS office
– Get answers to general tax-related inquiries

“This technological leap reflects our dedication to creating a tax system that is efficient, transparent, and responsive to the needs of taxpayers,” Adedeji emphasized.

Customer-centric approach

In addition to the USSD code, FIRS also launched its customer-centric guide, a handbook outlining the agency’s policies, processes, and procedures. This guide reaffirms FIRS’s commitment to treating taxpayers as valued partners in nation-building.

“This guide embodies our commitment to putting taxpayers at the centre of our service delivery,” the agency stated.

“It outlines the principles and values that will drive our interactions with taxpayers by ensuring that every engagement is defined by respect, professionalism, and efficiency.”

New era in tax administration

The combination of the USSD code and customer centricity guide marks a significant shift towards service excellence in tax administration.

As Adedeji said: “Through the combination of the *829# USSD code and the customer centricity guide, we are reinforcing a culture of service excellence and making tax compliance not just a duty but an experience that fosters trust and voluntary participation.”
