LAGOS LAUNCHES ATHLETE PORTALS FOR PROSPECTIVE TALENTS, INTRODUCES BIO-METRIC ID

In a bold move to redefine the future of sports in Lagos, the Lagos State Sports Commission has launched a new Athlete Portal with biometric ID integration, opening fresh opportunities for young and passionate talents to be discovered, tracked, and supported.

Revealing this at the press conference to unveil the Lagos Sports Development Reforms at the Commission’s Conference Room, the Director General, Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, acknowledged the critical role of data, transparency, and accountability in driving sustainable sports growth.

But I always look down there again.I know when that’s why you know a few thousand however no I mean that move out of the door in a row well that’s in that’s now what’s

According to him, the Commission is determined to reposition sports in Lagos by embracing innovation, streamlining athlete management, and creating a roadmap that prioritises grassroots development, talent nurturing, and athlete welfare.

“Prior to now, there has never been a central database to identify our athletes and manage their performance. To address this, we are introducing an online portal for the enlistment of senior athletes, monitoring, and performance evaluation,” Fatodu asserted.

Speaking on the new frameworks identified to reposition the sports ecosystem, the Director General unveiled the Lagos Sports Development Reforms, Renewed Grassroots Framework, and Roadmap to Athletes’ Revitalisation.

The agenda, according to him, will ensure that sports in Lagos are governed with clear structures, digital transparency, and an athlete-first approach.

Announcing that prospective athletes can register at https://lssc.lg.gov.ng/athlete-registration/ to be enlisted, profiled and monitored through the new digital system, he assured that the reconstituted teams will return with renewed discipline, stronger energy, and competitive spirit.

As part of the reforms, Fatodu revealed that the Commission will be introducing biometric data capture for proper profiling, access to facilities, monitoring, and career sustainability programmes.

To give structure to these reforms, he announced the introduction of the Team Lagos Reform and Transition Policy, which will allow new athletes and coaches to emerge through a transparent onboarding process. Appeal and reconsideration mechanisms, he said, will guarantee fairness for all.

This policy will set clear benchmarks for both athletes and coaches, supported by transparent retention, disengagement, and probation protocols.

Other mechanisms the Commission is putting in place to monitor and evaluate performance, according to him, include the appointment of a Sports Officer who will act as Athletes’ Liaison Officer and the establishment of a Team Lagos Monitoring Unit (TLMU) under the Office of the Director General.

The Commission is also working closely with stakeholders, teachers, parents, and community clubs to strengthen participation while expanding access to facilities across all divisions of the State. Alongside this, Lagos will launch the Team Lagos Open Trials 2025 across all IBILE divisions to ensure a steady inflow of talent.

While reaffirming that the Lagos State Senior Team remains dissolved, prohibiting anyone or group from parading themselves in such capacity, Fatodu added that special consideration will be given to outstanding athletes from the dissolved Team Lagos squad who have demonstrated excellence and consistency.

He stressed that these reforms are not isolated, but rather form a vision to make Lagos the centre of sporting excellence in Africa.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr. Bolaji Ogunlende, lauded the initiative, describing it as a game-changer in sports administration.

He noted that the budding talents across the state position Lagos as the natural hub for future champions, encouraging talents to seize the opportunity of the Commission’s new entry system to build lasting careers and global relevance in sports.

The Commissioner emphasised that the Governor remains committed to providing the enabling environment for youth empowerment through sports development, infrastructure upgrades, and inclusive programmes that nurture talents from the grassroots to the global stage.

“We are committed to inspire a new generation of champions, empower communities, and bring pride to the State”, Ogunlende stated.

The Commission further revealed that while athletes can conveniently register online via https://lssc.lg.gov.ng/athlete-registration/, it is also open to physical registration exercises to ensure that young talents in underserved communities are not left behind in the process.

The press conference was attended by Senior Special Assistant on Sports, Mr. Damilare Orimoloye; Senior Special Assistant on Sports Marketing, Mr. Opeyemi Adu and Management Staff of the Sports Commission.
