The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) have said Homegrown Feeding Programme for the school pupils during the COVID-19 lockdown would further drain the nation’s resources.

The association Thursday in a statement, signed by its National Public Relations Officer, Comrade Azeez Adeyemi in Abeokuta kicked against the action, while berating the Federal Government to suspend the programme.

The programme is in an efforts to tackle the effect of the coronavirus lockdown on the school children who are now at home.

NANS also queried the source of the proposed N697million to be spent daily, opining that the decision as not only “reckless spending, but also misplaced priority.”

NANS further lamented the Federal Government’s insistence to continue with the school feeding programme despite the shutdown of schools, describing the move as “an attempt to ridicule Nigeria.”

The body  questioned the rationale behind the continuation of the programme “when the priority of the government should be on finding a cure for the deadly Coronavirus pandemic.”

The statement reads in part: “We suspect that the continuation of feeding schoolchildren at their homes is another sham and a smokescreen hope at deceiving Nigerians.

“We are calling for the suspension of this structured daily looting and fraud under guise of home feeding of pupils.

“Where is the money to execute this programme coming from giving the fact that the government has always been crying of no money?”
