The unrepented social crusader and human right activist Comrade Ayodele Akele has been slated to be awarded by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) during their forth coming 40th Anniversary in Lagos
According to the release from Lagos State Chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, says that Comrade Ayodele Akele (National General Secretary of NCP) has been nominated for an award by the Lagos State Chapter of the NLC in recognition of his “contribution to the development of the labour movement in Nigeria”. The award is part of the program for the 40th anniversary of the NLC.
“It is important to note that our Comrade Akele was a formidable trade union leader who did not sellout or betray workers in struggle and defended to the last letter the interest of workers in his years as a trade union leader”,the statement qoted.
This is the kind of leadership that the Nigerian workers today are desperately seeking.
It could be recalled that Comrade Akele was dismissed by the Lagos State government under Tinubu’s adminstration for leading workers’ strike by providing a functional and pro-workers leadership
In the statement of his media aide Seni Ajai made it known that when the report of the award came there was the option of rejecting it in view of the treachery and inadequacies of the current labour leadership in the face of numerous attacks on the working masses but that could be like throwing away the baby and the bathwater.
“This award to us is another opportunity to rekindle the struggle for his reinstatement and to put on the agenda the need for vibrant and uncorrupt trade union leadership that would put the interests of workers first,.he concluded.
Comrade Ayodele Akele remains committed to the struggle for the liberation of the Nigerian working class from the chains of crude capitalist exploitation and oppression. Today, he is the National General Secretary of the National Conscience Party.
