A TV commentator Jose Pedro Pais has trash talked the appointment of former Venezuela coach Jose Peseiro as the substantive coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
The appointment of the Portuguese tactician has been greeted with mixed feelings all over and the latest is that coming from his countryman.
“Peseiro is a well known manager, person in Portugal. He’s been here for a long time, he is 61 I think,” he began.
“I don’t think he has much more to offer that we don’t already know but still I must confess I was quite surprised, if there is something that still surprise me today at soccer is that we know managers can change according to age and system if they have a good agent they can go everywhere in spite of the bad work they have done recently.” Jose Pais continued.
Jose Peseiro was appointed by the NFF as a replacement for axed gaffer Gernot Rhor and has been scheduled to take over after the Afcon although he will be in Cameroon as an observer.
The Boavista fan further continued saying he doesn’t think his countryman has the quality to compete with Portugal’s current wave of coaches.
He went ahead to mention the time the former assistant to Jose Mourinho spent with the Venezuela national team saying “he only got one victory in 10 games. I think that’s a really bad record. He left to Venezuela at August, he said that he had 14 months without collecting salary which is not exactly the same thing when you coaching a club or a country.”
While the Portuguese commentator acknowledged Peseiro will be working with a nice team with players mentioning the likes of of Chidozie Awaziem who plays for Boavista the club he supports, Zaidu Sanusi also a name in Portuguese football and other externals like Alex Iwobi, Victor Osimhen and Wilfred Ndidi, he still failed to see he (Peseiro) “can go very well”.
Finally, he added that if he was a Nigerian supporter, he “won’t be very excited” about the appointment.
“So I have seen that he is going to only manage the team after AFCON. so I think his success depends on the expectations on his job, on his performance and also these expectations will depend on how much success(ful) Nigeria is at this Afcon but still if I was a Nigerian supporter I won’t be very excited at this moment about his appointment”, he concluded.
Peseiro’s first assignment will be to ensure the Super Eagles qualify for 2022 World Cup in Qatar when the World Cup playoffs begin in March/April.
