Military regime in Nigeria has gone and gone forever but the activities of that inglorious era will continue to resonate. Babafemi Ojodu, former senator and co-founder The NEWS magazine, a radical and vibrant pro-democracy news medium that fought the military era of that time recently made a startling confession.

Ojudu who spoke at the 60th birthday celebration of his colleague, Kunle Ajibade, said that but for General Oladipo Diya, “we would have been dead now”.  According to him, Diya, who was Chief of General Staff, CGS to the late dictator, General Sani Abacha freely gave information to the human rights community to avoid arrest and death.

This confession reminded many people present of the dark days of the military regime, including the celebrant KunleAjibade who was jailed for life by the Abacha regime. He was however, later released after the death of Abacha.
